» Budapest Museums

Budapest is famous for its awe-inspiring Old World grandeur and cultural roots. Although the World War II and 1965 Revolution destroyed around 30,000 structures, the past of Budapest can still be seen in crumbling architectural antique details that remain today. While visiting Budapest, visiting some of the globally acclaimed museums is a must. These include museums for:

  1. Famous people – Check out the works of the famous Hungarian poet, Endre Ady at the Ady Memorial Museum. Be mesmerized by the 400 works of Hungarian artist “Father of Op-Art” by checking out the Vasarely Museum.
  2. Historical – If you want to see authentic Hungarian pieces from the 1900 and up, the Museum of Ethnography offers amazing photos, costumes, folk art & culture as well as traditional Hungarian farm life. Visit the Aquincum Museum to see the world-famous water organ and the relics of the 2,000-year-old Roman town of Aquincum.
  3. Culture and Art – The György Ráth Museum displays around 20,000 art pieces from Tibet, Japan, China, Mongolia, India and Nepal. Museum of Fine Arts is home to Spanish and Venetian collections as well as exhibits from the Renaissance period. At the Museum of Music History, hundreds of musical instruments from various periods are displayed along with a special exhibition of the work of Bartok Bela.

If you can’t decide among the dozens of spectacular museums in Budapest, I would recommend visiting the Gothic paintings at the Christian Museum in Esztergom, the Gothic and Romanesque furnishings at the Storno Collection in Sopron, the Avar finds and mock yurt at the Ferenc Mora Museum, the art Nouveau porcelain at the Zsonay Museum and a display of antique cookware at the Hungarian Commerce and Catering Museum.
